How to use wa.me links in your bot flows?

Learn how to use "wa.me" links within your Atom flows. Discover how to integrate them correctly in the Message component to redirect customers to other numbers, what limitations exist, and why you shouldn't use them in templates.

In this article we explain how to correctly add wa.me links in your flows using the Message component, what limitations exist, and in what strategic cases their use is recommended.

🧭 Where can wa.me links be used?

You can add any https://wa.me/ link within the "Message" type component in Flowbuilder. This includes both simple links and links with predefined text.

📌 Valid examples:

🚫 Important: They don't work as buttons in Templates

⚠️ Golden rule: wa.me links should never be placed as the URL of a button within a WhatsApp Template (HSM).

Currently, Meta's policies and template structure have strict restrictions on button format. They do not allow short domains like wa.me to be used as a "link" type action. Doing so will generate errors in the template or cause the button to be non-functional for the user.

🛠️ How to insert a wa.me link step by step

  1. Open Flowbuilder and drag a Message component onto the canvas.

  2. Draft your text: In the body of the interactive message, write the desired text and insert the wa.me URL.

  3. Contextualize the link: We recommend writing it naturally so the user knows what will happen when they click.

Example: "If you need to contact us via WhatsApp directly on our technical support line, click here 👉 https://wa.me/541112345678"

Save your flow: Once published, the link will appear in blue and be clickable in the user's WhatsApp interface.

💡 When is it convenient to use wa.me links?

These links are very useful in the following operational scenarios:

  • 🔁 Redirection to another WhatsApp number: Useful when your main bot needs to channel the user to a different line (ex. redirect from the main line to a specific sales executive or local branch).

  • 🌐 Routing from other channels: If your bot is running on your website's Web Chat or on Instagram, and you need to move the conversation to WhatsApp.

  • 📲 External campaigns: As part of proactive flows that seek to connect different brand touchpoints.

🧠 UX tip: Always clarify to the user that they will be redirected to a different chat or number before they click the link, this avoids confusion and improves the experience.

✅ Final best practices

  • ✔️ Use links only in the body of Message components, never in Template buttons.

  • ✔️ Test the links in the simulator or by sending yourself a test message before publishing the flow.

  • ✔️ Keep the correct phone number format: use the country code followed by the number, without the "+" sign, without spaces, hyphens, or leading zeros (ex. 541112345678, NOT +54 11 1234-5678).

Connect your channels intelligently! 🚀

wa.me links are an excellent tool for routing traffic to other numbers when used correctly. Apply these best practices in Flowbuilder and ensure smooth transitions for your users. ✅
